Group One

Please post your documentary here: either in a link to the Youtube page or a link to this blog where you posted it last week. Please then watch and respond to all group members blogs in a letter to each member, answering the following questions:

1) Does it make sense?
2) What is the filmmaker's intention as far as you can tell?
3) How is the "flow" for a) content and b) editing?
4) How does it make you feel?

Tell the filmmaker what is going well and what needs clarifying or enhancing. Suggest edits, ask questions, comment on the feeling you are left with at the end. At least 1/2 page double spaced for each letter. Bring digital or paper copies with you on Thursday to class.

    1. Since I will not be in class on Thursday I will just post my response to your documentary here:
      Atiana-

I found your documentary interesting. I think that I made sense of what I could hear while I was watching it. What I got from your interviews with this woman is that she is not from here so she has to adjust to life being in the US where she doesn’t always feel like she fits it. I had some trouble hearing what she was saying at some parts so I am not quite sure if this interpretation is correct. Maybe try playing around more with your editing software to see if you can fix the wind noises a little bit more? I think that would greatly enhance your documentary. As for the flow of your documentary, I think that the order in which you put your clips made sense and went well together. The editing seemed a little choppy at parts but overall, I thought that the flow was pretty good! After watching your documentary, it makes me think more about how tough it must be to feel like an “alien” in the place that you call your home. Keep up the good work!

    2. Atiana,

I really enjoyed your documentary. The cutouts included in your video made the video flow very well. I also liked how you had her just talk about herself in the beginning to introduce herself so we could get to know her background. The only thing I could critique is in the interview, there are people talking in the background, which distracts me from the important things she had to say. I also liked how you included photographs at the end to sum up her story. Overall, it was a great documentary and I enjoyed watching it.

    1. Since you won't be there I'll post mine as a comment as well.

      Mikaelah,
I thought your documentary was really good. Your subject for your documentary was very different from mine, but it probably will be different from other people in our class as well and that makes it stand out a lot. I thought your documentary made a lot of sense from start to finish. From personal experience, its hard to get everything you want in a small time frame but I think you did a great job of including everything and having your main subject go full circle in his story. I figured your intention was to show what it's like being a new dad. I think that was clear through your title and throughout your documentary, so good job. I thought the flow was great. I thought all of your content made sense, everything sounded like it was placed in the right places and your editing was well done. I really liked the background music in your movie. I thought it really added something extra. Your movie definitely put a little smile on my face because who doesn't love adorable babies?! But other than that, it definitely gave a good vibe throughout. Great job!

    2. Mikaelah,
Your documentary was adorable; I thought the cutaways of the baby were so cute. Your documentary was also very clear as to what it was about. As far as I can tell your intentions were to express what it’s like to become a parent. This might be a stretch but it you also could’ve intended to show what it’s like to receive something you didn’t exactly want at first but end up loving anyways (again, that may be a little bit of a stretch!). Your “flow” of content and editing looked fantastic, I thought the wedding pictures and pregnancy pictures were a nice touch and as I said before, I was obsessed with the cutaways of the baby. I also really liked the music you added in, great choice with the Bright Eyes song and it was a good idea to add in Stevie Wonder’s song, just because your brother brought it up and people who haven’t heard it before can hear it then. Your documentary makes me feel really happy, just because it was really sweet and all around positive and uplifting. I think you did a really good job!

    3. Mikaelah,
I really enjoyed your documentary. It was very heart warming and I love the sequence of events that were put together. I thought that the fact that you go from her not being born to after and how happy he was after she was born was really strong. The subject for your documentary was well thought out and original in my opinion. The flow of your documentary was really good and you fit everything into a small amount of time. The audio was very clear and the visual aspects of this video were all precise. I liked the bloopers at the end because it gave us a sense of what the subject is like without being video taped which I think is important. The background music was very clever because most people just have the background completely silent when interviewing but I think it gave it a lot more than if it was just silent. Overall, I loved this documentary and the whole idea of it.

  4. Brooks-

First off, I want to say that I really enjoyed your documentary. It is definitely one of my favorites from the ones that I have watched from our class so far. I think that it made sense and it was easy to tell what your documentary was about from the very beginning. I think that your cutaways were filmed very well and it all made sense since you conducted your interview outdoors as well. I have never heard of “hooping” before so I think that your documentary is very unique and stands out in comparison to some others. I think the flow of both your editing as well as the content was very good. It all made sense and there are no choppy editing slides. Your documentary really opened my eyes to this other form of artistic expression, which I really liked. One piece of advice that I have it to maybe made your subjects voice louder in some clips. It seems that maybe background noise from the interview itself or the background music that you used can make her sound a bit quieter at times. Overall I think your rough draft is very good and I don’t think that they is much else to change or add.

    1. Brooks,
First I want to start off by saying I love how strong the beginning of your video starts out. It forces you to pay attention with the upbeat music and vibrant colors. I liked the idea you chose to document. Its different from everyone else’s and I found this specific documentary very unique. The video flowed very well and there were no awkward silences. I thought the fading in and out of the music made the video very strong and completed it. Also, I liked how the setting was mainly outside and you stuck with that throughout the entire video. This made it easier to follow along and stay focused on the subject. Overall, I really enjoyed watching this documentary and it was very well put together.

    1. Shelby-

I really enjoyed watching your documentary. I think that you have a subject that is very different from a lot of others in our class so that makes you stand out. It made sense to me and it was very easy to pick out what your documentary was about from the very beginning. I think that the flow of the content of your film is very good. I really liked that before you showed any clips from America’s Got Talent that you introduced your subject and had her give some background information about herself. The editing is also executed pretty well in my opinion. Its not everyday that we get to hear about someone’s experience “on the other side of television” so your documentary was very interesting and I enjoyed watching it!

Here is the rough draft of my documentary. Sorry it took me so long, I had to start from scratch because my computer decided to delete my original video.

    1. Madison,
I enjoyed learning about your subjects experience. Your documentary was well put together and flowed very well. One thing I wish was included is background music during the interviewing. I realized that after watching a few of these interviews that low music during the interview gives it something that keeps the energy flowing. Especially because most of you video is interviewing, I think this would be a great addition. I like the idea of your documentary because most people don’t see this side of the job unless you experience it.
